Key to Discovering Your Own Personal Style

Key to Discovering Your Own Personal Style

In the age of social media it can be easy to be influenced, whether you notice it or not, by others. Perhaps you find yourself suddenly buying sneakers you originally hated, or rocking similar hairstyles as the people you follow.

Now, there is nothing wrong with this of course, people can like what they like regardless of who else likes it too. However, if you’re looking to differentiate yourself from the crowd and put your own twist on your appearance but don’t know where to start, this is the place.

Defining your own style can be quite simple, and doesn’t necessarily have to cost money, at least not in the beginning. Here are a few tips and tricks that have helped our own team at Alux discover their personal style.

- Dump your wardrobe. Let go of those clothing articles, or shoes or bags that you no longer wear. T-shirts or pants that you haven’t worn in months can be donated to your local thrift store. To start a new phase in your fashion journey you have to let go of those pieces that don’t do you justice anymore. A fresh start is everything!

- Establish your favorite colors and the colors that complement your skin tone. With so many options of clothing out in the market, this can help you narrow down what you buy. To get started in expanding your closet you can purchase articles of clothing, accessories and shoes that are in your favorite colors or colors you feel complement your skin tone. This is an efficient and simple way to get started that won’t overwhelm you.

- Go thrift shopping β€” online. Thrift shopping online on a platform such as Depop is a great way to develop your style. The reason being is that you’ll find many items that are unique and not considered fast fashion and Depop’s algorithm will help you curate your own personal style. You may find items on there that may β€œclash” with each other, but the more you physically like what you see on the app, the easier Depop will be able to show you more things that you may possibly like. This has personally helped me discover my style without the influence of other people.

- Take risks. In the past there were probably pieces of clothing you liked but shied away from out of fear of not being able to rock it or that it might be too out there. This is your sign to take that risk and buy that funky sweater or those edgy boots. Fashion is all about taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone. The best part is, is that fashion is subjective and at the end of the day all that matters is that you like it
