Carlos, one of Artisan Barber’s Master Stylists, brings a world of experience and a fresh perspective to every cut he makes. Originally from the beautiful island of Madeira, Portugal, Carlos’s journey to becoming one of the Upper East Side’s go-to barbers has been filled with change and creativity.

Growing up, Carlos moved around a lot, living in different countries and having to constantly switch between Portuguese, English, and Spanish. After moving to the United States 26 years ago, he initially settled in New Jersey, where he worked as a Spanish teacher. But his passion for people and creativity eventually led him to the world of barbering in 2005.

Carlos fell in love with the barbering industry for two main reasons: the constant interaction with customers and the endless creativity that comes with the job. “I like to get to know people, and I love the creativity,” he explains. “It’s something different every day. I love to experience something new.” This approach is evident in how he personalizes every haircut, making sure it fits both the client’s style and personality.

One of Carlos’s specialties is his expert use of both scissors and clippers to create the perfect blend. His precision and technique make him a favorite for clients who want a seamless, natural-looking cut. His mastery of this technique has made him a trusted stylist for clients seeking sharp, detailed fades.

Living on the Upper East Side, Carlos draws inspiration from one of his favorite places: Central Park. “If I could, I would be at Central Park every morning,” he says. He’s fascinated by the shapes of the trees, often drawing ideas from the natural layers he observes in nature. “The shapes of the trees give me ideas for haircuts,” he says. “I look at them and think, wow, those are good layers.”
